More than 70 photo works printed on silk paper are exhibited in the Art Gallery on the 1st floor and in the hall of the 3rd floor of the main university building. "For thirty years now I have been working with China. I can see how it is changing, so I can confirm that this exhibition correctly portrays both the past and the present times of this country,"&nbsp;shared Chairman of the Association of Photographers EURASIA&nbsp;Rashid Usmanov.&nbsp;"Recently, I have attended a congress of the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) in the People's Republic of China, and the Federation Head Liu Ming spoke much about the high relations between our two countries, but that we also need to strengthen them in practice, both on their part and on our part. This exhibition is a good example of exactly such a strengthening process." Meticulous work on preparing information about the artists, about the exhibited works and places depicted in them (cities and regions) had been performed by the staff member of the Cultural Theory and History Research and Education Centre and representative of the People's Republic of China&nbsp;Wang Yundong. You can learn detailed information about each of the works of photo art by using an electronic info booth installed at the Art Gallery on the 1st floor of the main university building. "This exhibition shows the spirit of our culture,"&nbsp;explained Wang Yundong, staff member of the Cultural Theory and History Research and Education Centre.&nbsp;"Have a look: various cities from Beijing to Hong Kong are represented here. You can see the masterpieces of architecture dating back to dynasties of different empires: the Forbidden City, or the Great Wall of China. Here are also the scenes of life of ordinary people living in the times of the People's Republic. There are more than fifty nationalities in China, and you can enjoy the colours of their festivities and share the feeling of happiness." This exhibition had been created jointly with the State Museum of the South Ural History, first it had been shown there and later moved to Salekhard located beyond the polar circle. "Photography is great because it has no language barriers,"&nbsp;noted Head of the Photo Heritage Department of the State Museum of the South Ural History&nbsp;Sergey Koliaskin.&nbsp;"No other means would facilitate such interpenetration of space and time, and nothing else would depict the culture of China so well or allow oneself to immerse into its everyday life. In our Museum, we are also opening a new exhibition about China." Part of the photos were taken in a Chinese Pictorialism style: when it is practically impossible to tell apart a photo from a traditional Chinese painting. "China is a very densely populated country,"&nbsp;commented the Head of the Art Gallery&nbsp;Anatoly Razuev.&nbsp;"Probably, the first thing about these photos that strikes me is the multitude of people, objects, and the alternation of vertical frameworks: it simple mesmerizes me." Students and university staff members from different institutes, from all floors of the main building and other university buildings gathered to attend the exhibition opening. The welcoming speech was offered by the organizer and leading research fellow of the Cultural Theory and History Research and Education Centre&nbsp;Nikolai Parfentiev, followed by the speeches by representatives of the university administration and culture community. "September 3rd is the Day of Victory over Militaristic Japan. And this is also the date of completion of World War II. So, this fact unites us,"&nbsp;said Director of the Institute of Media, Social Sciences and Humanities&nbsp;Lidiya Lobodenko.&nbsp;"Our institute and our university are a good example of friendship and collaboration between the peoples of Russia and China. We have many students and postgraduates from the People's Republic of China. This very exhibition is a result of co-creation work by a student and his teacher: Wang Yundong (who graduated from the Master's degree and postgraduate programmes) and his research advisor, Head of the Department of Theology, Culture, and Arts Nataliia Parfentieva." The research was conducted within the framework of a state order from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation on the topic of “Examining the Region in the Context of Global Historical Connections Using Methods of Digital Humanities”. A team of linguists created a digital resource, a unique product of its kind, that includes conceptually marked non-fiction texts. The corpus consists of notes and various publications by city residents, as well as guest travellers. The created resource helps to select articles by date, source name, author, and topic. Currently, the materials describe events at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. “After the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, became the “gateway” to Siberia, rich in natural resources. The population of the city then doubled and the impetus for development appeared. was even called a “Trans-Ural Chicago”,” explains the head of the study, Associate Professor Elizaveta Orekhova. “One of the students’ tasks was to prove whether that image corresponded to reality.” During the study, linguists found texts with a negative gist. For example, Wilhelm Harteveld, a Russian musicologist, noted: “There are several very suspicious hotel rooms for visitors near the railway station, where, they say, you can find not only temporary, but also eternal peace”. The same text could contain both criticism and approval. “This is a superb large theatre building made of stone and iron, standing on the outskirts of the city” Harteveld wrote about the today's Youth Theatre back in 1912. Many materials portrayed as a developing city: “New, fast-growing”; “The city undoubtedly has a great future”; “ is called the city of the future”. Students found that most of the texts had a positive connotation. “Some texts consisted of hundreds of pages, which complicated the process of creating an image of the city. It was necessary to fully study the text, analyse it, and structure the obtained data,” Alina Kutina, a participant to the study, shared the difficulties she encountered. Despite these problems, the students approached their work with interest. For themselves, they singled out the memoirs of Vladislav Zagorsky, a Polish doctor, who described the appearance of and life in it in a unique style: “The gardens gave the city a cheerful look”; “Housing there was fabulously cheap”; “The city is clean, with wide and clean streets.” Zagorsky called the Ural citizens “Amazingly sturdy.” The digital resource – a corpus of historical local texts – is ready for work. Potentially, the range of materials can be expanded. The resource is applicable for work in linguistic, cultural, and historical fields. </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-author field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Author:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items" id="md19"><div class="field-item even">Екатерина Багина</div></div></div> Wed, 12 Jun 2024 19:00:00 +0000 Евгений Сергеевич Загоскин 2231027 at Results of Student TEFI TV Contest at /en/news/2024/04/27/results-student-tefi-tv-contest <div class="field field-name-field-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items" id="md21"><div class="field-item even"><span id="styles-7-0" class="styles file-styles large"> <img width="5184" height="3456" id="7" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" src="/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/field/image/img_1002.jpg?itok=Ip9dGiPt" alt="" /></span></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items" id="md20"><div class="field-item even"> acted as the general partner and platform for the 10th Anniversary of the All-Russian Student TEFI Television Contest. All this has been brought together in Mikhail Gromyko’s photo exhibition called “Crimea”. It should be noted that the exhibition is dedicated to the anniversary of the Crimea's returning to Russia. Mikhail is a postgraduate of the Department of Theory and Methodology of Physical Culture and Sports of the Institute of Sport, Tourism and Service and an active rock climbing instructor at the Sports Centre. His passion for sports contributed to the creation of his own exhibition. “I'm into rock climbing, and I love discovering new interesting places in our vast homeland and telling other people about them. This time I have cast my eyes on the Crimean rock routes and their nature,” says the author. The exhibition is dedicated to the beauty of the Crimean nature. The photos were taken in June-July 2023 during an expedition to the rocks of the peninsula. Mikhail notes that it was a real challenge. There were some problems with logistics and restrictions on drone flights: “To take pictures of all these landscapes, I had to climb a rock of more than one hundred meters high. It wasn’t always possible to climb mountains with someone else. Going alone means carrying plenty of equipment, applying certain skills, and on top of all this, choosing a good angle so that you can present your work.” In total, about 20 rock routes were climbed during the trip: 2 multi-pitch climbs(120 meters solo on Mount Koshka), Bolvan rock (40 meters solo multi-pitch climb), multi-pitch climb on Mount Palvani-Oba (120 meters) and Sugarloaf (100 meters) in a two-man rope team. Also, 7 “Deep Water Solo” routes were climbed (2 of them were opened for the first time and included into the international database), as well as the longest via ferrata in Russia was completed on Mount Ilyas-Kaya. The main locations were the city of Sudak, the village of Novy Svet, the villages of Laspi and Simeiz. “Each of the photos is good in its own way. I can note an interesting photo with a jellyfish. I have never had anything like this in my collection. Also a photo from when I kayaked at Caradac. I don't have much kayaking experience, so it was very interesting to float. No one is allowed into an extinct volcano, especially if it's located in a wildlife reserve, but you can swim up to it from the sea and explore it,” shares Mikhail Gromyko. You are welcome to visit this photo exhibition. It is located on the 3rd floor of the main university building. </div></div></div> Tue, 19 Mar 2024 19:00:00 +0000 Евгений Сергеевич Загоскин 2161527 at Students of the Institute of Media, Social Sciences and Humanities Presented Digital History of Website /en/news/2023/12/19/students-institute-media-social-sciences-and-humanities-presented-digital-history <div class="field field-name-field-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items" id="md25"><div class="field-item even"><span id="styles-9-0" class="styles file-styles large"> <img width="1871" height="896" id="9" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" src="/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/field/image/snimok_ekrana_2023-12-18_v_09.51.06.png?itok=yA_WxnYG" alt="" /></span></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items" id="md24"><div class="field-item even">History students of group СГ-406 presented a Digital History of website on December 11th. As part of the Young Stars project, this event became the first in the program of celebrations dedicated to the 80th anniversary of our university. The platform includes key periods in the history of the higher educational institution: Creation of Mechanical Engineering Institute (CMEI) (1943–1951), Creation and Development of Polytechnic Institute (CPI) (1951–1990), Polytechnic Institute (1990–1997), (1997–2015), and University of the 21st Century. (October 23, 2015 – present time).  The creators of the website managed to integrate the results of long-lasting scientific research by the Department of Russian and International History of the Institute of Media, Social Sciences and Humanities, including the works of the Oral History Laboratory (headed by Doctor of Sciences (History), Professor Viktor Balakin), the publication of archival documents (under the leadership of Doctor of Sciences (History), Professor Igor Sibiryakov), Public and Digital History Master’s degree programme (supervisor: Doctor of Sciences (History), Associate Professor Olga Nikonova). In addition to presenting the project, 4th-year students were engaged in filling the website with content (The Great Siberian Road film about the interuniversity expedition, materials and photographs from the Museum of History over 1951–1997). The students were assisted by their teachers: Acting Head of the Department, Candidate of Sciences (History), Associate Professor Svetlana Krivonogova, Candidate of Sciences (History) Alexey Bogdanov, assistant Yulia Bogdanova, as well as Head of the Museum and Education Complex Nadezhda Ivanova. The leader of group СГ-406 Maria Leshukova said that students must know the history of their alma mater, because the development of scientific schools and achievements, the quality and quantity of academic staff, and the material and technical resources form the image of our university, and therefore evoke a sense of pride in all involved. “It performs not only an educational, but also a scientific and social function: people with disabilities (including researchers) can view digitized documents directly from home. In the process of work, what struck me most was the archive of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, especially the photographs of testing! I would like to appeal to all departments with a request to share their archives so that our website develops and becomes of interest to all users,” said Maria about the prospects of the project. Another participant, Gleb Sidorov, emphasized that digital history is a modern way of reconstructing the past. The relevance of the project is determined by the mediatization of culture, which today allows us to create new educational spaces and implement interdisciplinary scientific collaborations. “The prospects of the website are determined by the digitalization of the humanitarian heritage, the creation of historically oriented systems and the publication of research results in an electronic format,” noted the student.
