April 7th through April 8th, the prospects of the mutually beneficial cooperation in the fields of academic exchange, training of Chinese and Russian students in a Master's degree programme taught in English, as well as scientific collaboration were discussed at Henan Normal University between the university's leadership and the delegation from the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications. Our delegation included: Director of Institute of Linguistics and International Communications Elena Yaroslavova, Head of the International Exchange Centre Tatiana Vasileva, Head of the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language Aleksandra Mironova, and Head of the Pre-University Division for Foreign Citizens Elena Kharchenko. Also, an open lecture on Master's degree programmes offered at the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications was organized for undergraduate students. Chinese students had a great opportunity to ask their questions regarding studying at �� in person. As a result of this work, interviews were held with all those willing to enrol in Master's degree programmes of the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications, and among the participants were more than 50 potential students.

On April 7, 2025, an International Science-to-Practice Conference on ��Linguistic and Cultural Interaction of the Countries of the One Belt, One Road Initiative�� wrapped up at Henan Normal University. Over the period of three days, the venues in Xinxiang, �� and Shymkent hosted the meetings of sections, where scientists and teachers of the Russian Language and Literature discussed the issues of difficulties of intercultural communication, difficulties in translation of both literary and specialized texts, and the new methods of teaching foreign languages. Around 200 people from various cities of the three countries took part in this event. The formal plenary meeting held at Henan Normal University became a symbolic summarizing of scientific inquiries by researchers from these three countries. Professors from the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language Elena Kharchenko and Aleksandra Mironova presented the results of their research achievements in the field of psycholinguo-cultural studies; Director of Institute of Linguistics and International Communications, Candidate of Sciences (Pedagogy) Elena Yaroslavova demonstrated the paths of forming of digital competences in modern teachers of foreign languages; Head of the International Exchange Centre, Candidate of Sciences (Philology) Tatiana Vasileva presented case studies of solving difficulties when translating public speeches of famous politicians. Also, leading scientists in the field of Russian as a Foreign Language from the People's Republic of China presented their reports at the plenary meeting: Professor Ma Weihong from Zhejiang University of Foreign Languages, Professor Liu Zuoyan from Jilin University, Professor Wang Songting from Zhejiang University of Foreign Languages. At the conference's closing ceremony, Director of the Institute of Foreign Languages of Henan Normal University Mr. Liu and Director of Institute of Linguistics and International Communications of �� Elena Yaroslavova summed up the results of the successful work at the conference and expressed their hope for expansion of the cooperation between the universities.

The Translation Section of the Youth Centre for Intercultural Integration of the �� Institute of Linguistics and International Communications organized a new meeting of a professional translator Yaroslav Pisarev with students. Yaroslav Pisarev, Candidate of Sciences (Pedagogy) and an experienced sports translator, has worked at the Olympic Games, World Cups in football, judo, taekwondo, KHL All-Star Games and other major tournaments. The topic of the master class on ��How to Prevent Tyson from Biting off Your Ear Because of Bad Interpreting�� sparked great interest among students, and the number of those willing to attend this event exceeded all expectations. ��Such meetings are very useful not only for students, but also for us teachers. It is like a breath of fresh air, we once again feel confident that we are on the right path, we teach what is needed and we do it the right way!�� noted Ekaterina Shefer, Head of the Youth Centre for Intercultural Integration. Students of the Translation and International Relations programmes, Master��s students from countries of the near and far abroad learned about all the stages of preparation for major sports events, the role of interpreters in this process, and how important it is not only to understand the specifics of the material being translated, but also to be able to act quickly in unusual situations. ��This master class has become an excellent motivation for further development in the field of translation! Yaroslav has shared valuable experience accumulated over the years of his working at major international competitions. It has been especially interesting to learn about the specifics of interpreting in different types of sports, about not only the importance of linguistic accuracy, but also the understanding of the context and terminology. Russia is a country that always arouses interest in people all over the world. In spite of the fact that English is an international language, courses of Russian language and university degrees in Russian literature become more and more popular every year. Many tourists come here to see all the beauty and greatness of the country they heard so much about. Myths and stereotypes serve a profound role in cultures and traditions around the world, anchoring people to a sense of history and meaning through allegorical storytelling. A stereotype is an over-generalized belief about a particular category of people. It is an expectation that people might have about every person of a particular group. The type of expectation can vary; it can be, for example, an expectation about the group's personality, preferences, appearance or ability. While such generalizations about groups of people may be useful when making quick decisions, they may be erroneous when applied to particular individuals and are among the reasons for prejudice attitudes. So we can say that most stereotypes are fictions. Every year people from different countries come to �� to study and get their higher education. What did they hear about Russia before coming here? Did they believe in the myths and stereotypes? Which of them were true? ��I heard lots of myths about Russia before I came here. Russians are very strong, kind and powerful nation, they can kill bears, it is dangerous to argue with Russian old ladies�� Nowadays I can say that Russian people are really kind and strong, they are really helpful and always ready to give you assistance. And actually I��ve never seen bears in the streets. To my mind myths appear because people are afraid of something unknown and usually they believe what they��ve heard. It may also depend on their experience, education, place of work. When we do country studies and read a lot, we understand that to judge people by their nationality is a huge mistake,�� shares Wang Yuying (��Ө), a �� student from China studying at the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications (major: Philology). ��I heard many stories about Russia. All my friends and family told me that Russia is a mafia country and I will meet mobs everywhere �C in the streets, banks, restaurants and shops. Russian people never smile and they are unfriendly. Russian girls are beautiful. Winter lasts for 12 months. When I came here I understood that some stories were false and some were true. People smile and are always ready to talk, summer is quite hot, and there are no mobs. And Russian girls are incredibly beautiful. A �� student from China Wang Yuying (��Ө) studying at the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications (Major: Philology) told us about her life and study in ��. Why do you like Russia, ��, and ��? I like Russian people and their way of life. They are very sincere and kind. This is my third year here. I have a lot of Russian friends, we often go out, talk, go to the theater, walk in the park. We frequently observe wonderful sunrises and sunsets; they look different every day. I constantly take pictures and have a vast gallery of beautiful photos. If I tell about my studies, I would first of all thank the faculty and university staff of ��. They��ve helped me so much! Even if their working hours are over, they are online answering my questions and giving advice. What is your most bright impression about the study? What subjects are your favourite ones? Semester exams�� This is the first thing coming up to my mind when I think about studies. I guess an exam period is an unforgettable memory for a student. We��ve been studying the subjects for months, we��ve learned a lot, and we don��t want just to pass the exams, we want to pass them very well. As for me, my goal is to get a diploma with honors from the first day I got into grad school. How do you plan to use your education in the future? I am planning to teach Chinese students the Russian language. As a future teacher, I always ask myself how to explain this or that topic to a student. My experience as a person who didn't know Russian at all but now can write and speak quite fluently helps me. My further step in studying will be entering the postgraduate school at ��. What is your greatest challenge about living in Russia? I think it is living on my own. I used to live with my parents and didn't need to think about anything, except for studying. But when I came to �� I had to consider everything by myself - what to cook, where to live, how much money to spend. It was difficult, but the experience was very helpful. What was your first impression of ��? When I first saw the main building, I fell in love with it. It��s magnificent. Then the responsible teachers made a good impression. They��re kind, hard-working, they��ve supported me a lot not only with my studies but also with some household problems. Do you take part in activities organized by the �� Association of International Students and �� Center for Sociocultural Adaptation? Yes, I took part in organizing and promoting events, attending meetings, preparing prizes for participants. Except for that, I am the Chinese representative to AIS as I��m in charge of Chinese students. I show them where they can find banks, shops, diners, and help with filling out the documents. I��m very happy to work with them. What perspectives does a specialist with a Russian diploma have in your country? To my mind, the prospects of an expert to a greater extent depend on his or her professional knowledge. If he studied hard, he��d be able to do more than students who spent their time playing computer games or watching TV. What is the topic of your thesis? This is ��How to Teach Chinese Students to Read Poetry (a lesson based on the poem ��The Sail�� by Mikhail Lermontov)��. It is of great importance for the methodology to study how Chinese students understand literary texts. Why do so many universities try to attract international students for studying? I think universities invite international students in order to foster cultures and intercultural exchange and improve the quality of education. Do you keep in touch with your compatriots who obtained �� degree? Of course! I know that they work in various fields: some are teachers at schools and universities; another are interpreters in companies and institutions. The Main Difficulties in Mastering Written Speech in a Foreign Language are Identified

Learning a foreign language is an integral part of training a competent specialist capable of high academic mobility. Teachers of the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications of �� conducted a study on the results of the All-Russian Foreign Language Contest ��Prometheus��. Analysis of the students' work allowed identifying typical mistakes made by students in writing. The results will be used to adjust the teaching methodology of foreign language writing to Russian-speaking students. The results of the study were published in the International Journal of Instruction indexed by Scopus and Web of Science (Q1). The Foreign Language Contest "Prometheus" allowed to determine the level of proficiency in writing Anna Skorobogatova, a postgraduate student at the department of Life Safety, senior lecturer at the Foreign Languages ??Department, and Irina Melikhova, senior lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages at the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications, conducted a study based on the results of the Foreign Languages contest ��Prometheus�� to evaluate students' written language skills. 500 students from 12 universities of Russia became participants in the contest. This Contest in foreign languages for students ??has been held at �� for 6 years since 2014. Since 2019, on the initiative of the head of the Department of Foreign Languages, Ph.D. Volchenkova Ksenia, the contest received the All-Russian status. One of the goals of the contest is to identify the level of all types of speech activity. The Contest is aimed 1 and 2-year full-time non-linguistic majors. Writing skills levels are based on the results of the Contest ��Letter�� section. The format for written test is an essay. ��The analysis of the contestants�� written works revealed that the most difficult thing when writing an essay in a foreign language is the ability to express and argue one��s own opinion. Another problem is the grammatical arrangement of the statement and the need to formulate the problem at the beginning of the essay without repeating the statement of the assignment, but using synonyms and syntactic paraphrase. The text arrangement, namely the division of the text into paragraphs and the use of logical communication means caused complexity in more than half of the contestants. Spelling and punctuation are the highest among the 4 monitored criteria. It is necessary to reconsider the approach to teaching writing in a foreign language and improve the methodology of teaching,�� Irina Melikhova, senior lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages says. It is planned to develop and put into practice a complex of exercises aimed at more efficient development of communicative skills in writing a text. The new course will consist of a textbook and online course, so students will be able to master some of the material independently and do tests and tasks for self-assessment. Writing is the basis of business and professional communication Graduates of linguistic and non-linguistic majors at �� quite often continue their education abroad. To do this, a candidate should pass one of the international exams, for example, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Each exam has writing in it. When passing IELTS for an intermediate level, you need to write an essay, for an advanced level - to describe a schedule, diagrams or formulate conclusions in writing, guided by the information in the table. Since 2017, �� students have the opportunity to pass these exams, taking courses to prepare for them in 4-6 semesters. Professional written foreign language communication has become an integral part of the activities of any scientific institution or industrial enterprise. With the continuing importance and value of oral communication today, almost 80% of information exchange in the field of science, engineering and technology is carried out using written language both within organizations and between them. ��Learning written language in a university training system can contribute to the development of other important skills and the process of mastering a foreign language in general. The tasks to be solved when teaching written speech include the development of speech-thinking skills and the ability to formulate a thought according to the written style, expanding knowledge and mastering the culture and intellectual ability to create written texts. These are young people from around the world interested in studying the economy and politics of Russia and countries of Central Eurasia. As a rule, students from other countries choose the Regional Studies programme, which has two profiles: Asian and European studies. For international studies, these programmes are only offered in their country��s capital. In our region, �� is the only university at which international students can study in this programme. Students from 52 countries from around the world earn both language skills by studying Russian and learn about the cultural tradition of our country. The university celebrates national Russian holidays �C New Years, Christmas, Maslenitsa, and more. An Institute of Rare Professions The Institute of Linguistics and International Communications is educating linguistic engineers capable of developing competent technical tasks for programmers while taking into account linguistic nuance. There are few places in the country where it is possible to earn an education in this rare, but very promising field, which is located at the crossroads of informational technologies and linguistics. In Russia, there are a few dozen universities that offer their students this unique programme, and in our region �C only ��. The aim of this field is to develop software with a linguistic base used by machine translators, chat bots, and search engines. ��The development of informational technologies and international economic relations is difficult to imagine today without linguists. Mobile phones which can execute voice commands, cars which can be ��ordered�� to begin driving �C all of this is being developed alongside linguistic engineers,�� comments Elena Yaroslavova. �� has been educating these specialists for many years and teaches foreign languages to everyone who needs them for their personal growth and career.�� A strong educational centre in linguo-informational technologies has been opened for �� students. The main employers of graduates in linguistic engineering are closed structures and bodies of internal affairs as well as IT companies in St. Petersburg and Moscow interested in creating mobile devices. For example, one of the ILIC graduates, Artem Lukanin, has been employed in the computer linguistics sector of the United Nations in the Netherlands. At the same time, the strong language training offered at our university allows young specialists to work as translators or teachers, if they choose. ��Graduates with a degree from �� have already proven themselves in the international labour market; many businesses send the Institute of Linguistics calls for new staff members,�� says the ILIC Director Elena Yaroslavova. ��The best commendation for us are the careers of our graduates. And today, they are working in big Ural, Russian, American, and European companies and teaching in foreign universities and government agencies in the Russian Federation.��

Inter-university Student Science-to-practice Conference Closed at ILIC

On April 16th of 2019, a traditional Inter-university Student Science-to-practice Conference was held at the Department of International Relations, Politology and Regional Studies of the?Institute of Linguistics and International Communications. Similar to the previous years, among the conference participants were students of not only ��, but also of the friendly South Ural State Humanitarian Pedagogical University (CSPU). With special pleasure we would like to note that the conference presentations were delivered by Bachelor��s students, Master��s students and postgraduates, what made it possible to take a look at the issues under discussion from different points of view and from different levels of scientific mastery. Preparation to Youth Forum of the SCO Started at �� as Part of Project-based Learning

On February 1st, as part of the project-based learning the?Institute of Linguistics and International Communications?launched an interdisciplinary project, the main goal of which is the development of the concept and technology of organising and holding of Youth Forum of the SCO. The grounds for the fulfilment of this project is the need to discuss the topical issues of the world��s politics, economics and culture at the students�� community level. The first organisational meeting was held by the project participants on February 20th when they outlined the plan of works and created work groups. The next meeting, which was held March 6th, allowed to take a closer look at the history of SCO, at its structure, goals and tasks, and also information blocks on the economical, cultural-and-humanities, and military-and-political collaboration were paid attention. On March 18th the project participants gathered to discuss the topics on Forum of the SCO, and on SCO University. The created groups presented information on the already held forums, their main goals and formats, on the programmes being fulfilled in the network Shanghai Cooperation Organisation University, and on the subtleties of training. In the process of brainstorming, the attendees could elaborate two main topics for further consideration and creation of the Youth Forum concept: uniting the youth of the SCO-member countries within scientific activities and creating transnational student squads. According to the schedule, the project will be fulfilled February 1, 2019 through June 1, 2020. The main tasks of the project include: improvement of the political culture and of the knowledge in the field of international politics and diplomacy in young people; personal enrichment and broadening the knowledge on the political systems of the SCO- and BRICS-member countries, on the state system of the latter, their role and place in the world��s politics; training the team of the volunteer division for the 2020 SCO and BRICS Summits. Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is an international organisation established in 2001 by the leaders of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kirghizia and Uzbekistan. In 2020 the SCO and BRICS Summits will be held in �� for the first time.
