Dr. Majid Naseri: «The world’s great challenges do not have national boundaries»

Since 2021 �� had been taking a part in the Priority–2030 Programme. The goal of the federal academic leadership program Priority 2030 is to form a large group of universities that will become the leaders in creating new scientific knowledge, technology, and developments for introduction into the economy and social sphere in Russia. Within the framework of the program, �� implements three strategic projects that are essential to the development of the region and the country. One of them – The New Non-conventional Materials strategic project is represented by two subprojects, one of which is the established interdisciplinary team of scientific schools on high-entropy materials lead by E. Trofimov. In the project of Eugene Trofimov «Materials with multi-component base» (high entropy materials) takes an active part Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering (Physical and Mechanical Properties of Nanostructured Materials Dr. Majid Naseri. Foreign scientist came to South Ural from Iran. The field of scientific interests of Dr. Majid Naseri is closely related severe plastic deformation (SPD) process. During the interview Majid tell us about the desigion to become a scientist, about the field of scientific interests nowadays, about his important role in the project of Eugene Trofimov «Materials with multi-component base» (high entropy materials) and about his life in Russia. Chapter 1. Science Where are you from? Could you tell us about your hometown? My name is Dr. Majid Naseri. I’m 36 years old. I’m from Iran, and my hometown is Golestan Province, Gorgan City. The Golestan Province is one of the 31 provinces of Iran, located in the north-east of the country, south of the Caspian Sea, and its capital is Gorgan. The region is such a charming destination – both naturally and culturally—that it can keep you busy for weeks. In addition, the region has a very rich history and was one of the most important cities of ancient Persia on the Silk Road. What inspired you to become a scientist? I have a PhD. in Materials Science and Engineering (Physical and Mechanical Properties of Nanostructured Materials, 2018) from Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, Ahvaz, Iran. And since the beginning of September 2022, I have been working as a Senior Research Scientist at ��. I can say that my interest in extending and developing Materials Science and Engineering started with the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) course. What led you to make the decision to come to Russia and live in ��? Answer: After graduating with a PhD, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Nanotechnology, Semnan University, Semnan, Iran, from September 2018 to February 2022. Also, I was working at the Research Institute of Advanced Materials, Seoul National University (SNU), Seoul, South Korea, as a postdoctoral researcher until 2021. My Prof. Lab was retired in February 2021, and I was go back to Iran to finish my research projects at Semnan University, Semnan, Iran. Since the beginning of 2022, I’ve decided to come to Russia because I dreamed about continuing research in the largest country in the world with forbidding winters. Russia was a perfect place, as this country is welcoming to everybody. I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn how Russian people live. How did your career in science begin? I completed my Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) course at Isfahan University of Technology (IUT), Isfahan, Iran (2007–2012). Having a historical, cultural, and civilizational background, Isfahan city is considered one of the scientific, cultural, and historical centers of the country. IUT has, due to its vast environment and unique facilities, made itself an important place among the country’s universities. To be honest, my scientific activities began there. Please tell us, where your path in science started? What motivated you to dedicate your life to chemistry? My scientific activities about Materials Science and Engineering began from the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) course at Isfahan University of Technology (IUT), Isfahan, Iran (2007–2012). Also, I was an expert in chemistry, physics, and mathematics courses during high school. It should be noted that the materials science is a multi-disciplinary field that involves the creation and manufacture of new materials with specific desired properties. On the other hand, materials science sits at the boundary between engineering and the natural sciences. Thus, a typical materials science curriculum emphasizes math, chemistry, and physics. To be honest, if time goes back to high school, I will still choose Materials Science and Engineering course. Did the research theme at �� play a significant role in attracting you to the position? �� has one of the best structures for scientific activity in the Russian Federation and the basis for the development of scientific directions for schools and institutes. The university is at the forefront of science, and �� scientists are publishing significant data in many journals. For this reason, I contacted the International Relations Department and Prof. Eugene Trofimov (Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Physical Chemistry of Materials); after that, the university invited me to the full-time position of Senior Research Scientist at the Research Laboratory of High-Entropy Materials. Since that date, I have tried my best to do something good and unique for the Research Laboratory where I work and, consequently, for the �� on an educational and research level. Who of the ��’s scientists is developing this field? Prof. Evgeny Trofimov, Prof. Nataliya Shaburova, and Prof. Marina Samodurova What is your sphere of expertise today? Bulk Nanostructured Metals (BNM), High-Entropy Alloys (HEAs), Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD), Materials Characterization, Crystallographic Texture What is your role in Eugene Trofimov’s research project? Prof. Trofimov has experience performing R&D works, including those carried out with the support of RSF and other foundations sponsoring and supporting research studies. He is one of the best of ��’s scientists in the HEAs field! With his suggestion, I’m working on the fabrication and characterization of nanostructured high-entropy alloys (NsHEAs) by severe plastic deformation (SPD) process. For the past two years, I have been working on two projects successfully. First Project 1. Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Title: Nanostructured high-entropy alloys for industrial and transportation applications ��, Russia, 2023-2024. Contract № 075-15-2023-614 с. Second Project 2. Russian Science Foundation (RSF) Title: Achievement and research of low-cost nanostructured high-entropy alloys through severe plastic deformation process Project Number: 24-29-00740 How would you describe the main objective of your research to someone without a scientific background? High-entropy alloys (HEAs), a novel alloying concept in physical metallurgy, contain at least four or five principal elements. Compared to conventional alloys, HEAs have high configurational entropy, which tends to stabilize the solid solution formation. HEAs have already attracted lots of new ideas to explore the enormous compositional space provided by them because of their potential in structural and functional applications. Therefore, the main challenge that HEAs are currently facing is associated with effective alloy design, which can provide information to choose suitable constituent elements, resulting in the desired phase constitution and microstructure and, in the end, optimum properties. It is noteworthy that the current composition design strategy for HEAs usually results in alloys with a high content of expensive metals (e.g., Co, Ta, Hf, V, Nb, W, and Mo). For instance, HEAs usually contain a Co element, which is common in most of the HEAs. Obviously, using expensive elements increases the overall cost of HEAs. On the other hand, HEAs usually exhibit comprehensive properties due to their combined effects of multi-principal elements, which makes them suitable for applications in extreme environments. Thus, the development of cost-effective HEAs with comprehensive properties is critical to promoting industrial applications of HEAs related to the production and use of materials in the Russian Federation. Do you enjoy working at ��? What advantages do you see in working here? Yes. It should be noted that the �� is a National Research University and the project «Priority 2030» (track «Exploratory Leadership») participant. Also, modern laboratories and analytical and technological equipment available at �� are advantages for working here. Do you have any plans for joint publications related to the project? Yes. Good joint publications with Iran, China, United Arab Emirates, and United Kingdom will be published soon. And I have 50 publications in my CV so far. These publications are the result of 10 years of research in the field of materials science and engineering. How do you see your future in science? Very good question. Actually, I have tried my best to do something good and unique for the Research Laboratory where I work and, consequently, for the �� on an educational and research level. As a scientist, my goal is to understand the natural world through systematic observation, experimentation, and analysis. I aim to contribute to the body of scientific knowledge and make advancements in my field of study. Also, I’m trying to get a university position, and I’m sure that day is not far away.

Vice-Rector Marina Potapova: Priority of �� Is to Create a Student-Centred Model

Today, �� keeps developing in all spheres of interest: participating in the World-class Ural Interregional Research and Education Centre (UIREC) and the Priority 2030 program, and creating development opportunities for university students. All this is closely associated with the educational policy implemented at our university. We talked about this and many other things with Marina Potapova, Vice-Rector for Education. Last year �� became a member of the Priority 2030 federal program. How did this influence the educational policy at our university? Even before participating in the Priority program, our university had started to develop a student-centred model of education. Acting Rector Alexander Wagner often highlights the fact that students are the most important people at the university. Young people want to develop, acquire skills and accumulate the knowledge and accomplishments that they will take with them after graduating. And today, �� gives students an opportunity to independently choose additional qualifications and competencies they would like to obtain. Let us imagine an average student who is about to transfer to the second year of studies and is aware of what s/he wants. What opportunities can �� offer for his/her development? Here, a lot depends on the priorities of this student, but to answer your question, there are plenty: minors, project-based learning, technological entrepreneurship, digital department, language training. All of this already exists and actively functions at our university. To participate in these programs, one does not even need to be a straight-A student, a desire is all that you need. With the creation of the interuniversity campus, there will be even more of such opportunities. How the participation of the university in the interuniversity campus will influence the �� educational projects? Six universities of our region are participating in the interuniversity campus project. These are: ��, �� State University, South Ural State Agrarian University, Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University, South Ural State Medical University and International Institute of Design and Service. Each university has its own specifics, strengths and development priorities. Within the framework of the interuniversity campus, educational programs will be designed in collaboration with the participating universities. Now, all universities are facing an important task: to provide training of highly qualified specialists who are ready to quickly integrate into an extremely dynamic digital economy and to create technological and industrial projects. How does the university participate in the life of graduates? Does �� help them find a job and, as you said, integrate into the modern digital economy? The process of choosing a place of work and tasks, which a specialist will be dealing with after receiving a diploma, starts long before graduation from ��. Each student takes an internship at partner enterprises. We are moving towards what I call a seamless employment. How could you define a seamless employment? During the process of learning, students obtain a job and after receiving their diploma they move from the university bench directly to their workplace. This is the first interview from the #OpportunitiesPriority series, where we will talk about the educational policy of our university. �� is a university of transformations, where innovative research is conducted in most of the priority fields of science and technology development. In accordance with the strategy of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation, the university is focused on the development of big scientific interdisciplinary projects in the field of digital industry, materials science, and ecology. In 2021 �� became the winner in the competition under the Priority 2030 program. The university acts as a regional project office of the World-class Ural Interregional Research and Education Centre (UIREC), which is aimed at solving the tasks of the Science and Universities National Project. In 2023 �� will celebrate its 80th anniversary. Information: The project on creating a network of campuses is part of the Science and Universities National Project implemented by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. The task of creating at least 25 world-class campuses by 2030 was set by the Russian President Vladimir Putin. Two waves of competitive selection rounds for projects of new campuses have already taken place. In 2021, out of 27 applications received from 22 regions, 8 campus projects were selected for implementation, including a project from the �� Region. In 2022, 39 applications were submitted from 34 regions, and 9 campus projects were selected.

Yusuf Ismoilov is a first-year student of the Institute of Engineering and Technology. He was born in Uzbekistan, but decided to get education in Russia, in South Ural. Yusuf is interested in sports, books and self-development. He was really impressed by �� and ��. And here Yusuf tells us about his emotions and feelings. — Tell us please why you have chosen education in Russia. — I think that it’s a great opportunity to get really worthy education, to gain perspectives in my life. Also it’s a chance to make friends! — In what universities did you apply to? — Frankly speaking, �� was the only and the best option for me. I’ve heard about this university before. And I’ve found programmes I was interested in while I was surfing sites of different universities. So, I made a choice – now I’m studying in Institute of Engineering and Technology. — What impressions did you have when you saw �� first time? — It was awesome. I couldn’t imagine that �� is so enormous, that so many students are studying at the university. And our lecturers are awesome. They are very helpful and professional: their lectures and explanations are clear and interesting. — Did your compatriots help you when you came to �� and entered ��? — Yes, of course. My brother is living here and studying at ��. He is in his fourth year as a student of economics. And he helps me and supports me very much. Thanks to him it’s easier for me to study here. — Say some words about your programme: do you already have favourite subjects or lecturers? — I like my programme. It’s rather difficult for me, but interesting. And I’m ready to study. I already have my favourite subject and now it’s English. We have an amazing lecturer – Ekaterina Mikhailovna. I feel that thanks to her my language level is becoming higher. — Who studies with you? — As far as I can judge there are many international students. And it’s comfortable for me. And it was rather easy for me to find common ground with my groupmates. I hope that after 4 years we will graduate together. And all together we’ll get a degree and celebrate it. — What do you usually do in your non-study time? — During non-study time I often read something or do sport. Also I’m fond of walking around ��. And I’m interested in self-development. — And what emotions do you have about ��? Do you like it? — I’m impressed by ��. It’s a city with very unusual atmosphere. I met very hospitable and friendly people here. Also I like weather in �� – I like that it’s often chill, there is no heat! English-Taught Welding Programme Gives Students a Career Head Start

Welding Engineering Department of the Institute of Engineering and Technology offers a Master’s programme Mechanical Engineering (major: Welding Engineering). The programme is based on the research of the department for the application of soft layers in welded joints made of high-strength steels. “The development of modern economical-alloyed high-strength steels increases the technical and economic efficiency, strength and durability of highly loaded welded structures exploited under extreme natural and climatic conditions. The success of these materials for welded structures depends on the welding technology used and the welded joint design. The field of knowledge includes the management of welding operations and the management of the design and construction of welded structures,” shares Mikhail Ivanov, the Programme Coordinator. The teaching staff of the department is engaged in scientific research and is active in publishing. The lectures are given by foreign scientists, visiting scholars from the Russian Academy of Sciences, and representatives of the world’s largest companies such as Pino Tese, the President of SMS Group and Honorary Professor at ��. Development of new high-tech and reliable welded structures is based on the digitization of design and production procedures. That’s why masters will study modern software products - ANSYS (supercomputer modeling), Solidworks, Compass-3D (design and 3D modeling), ESI SYSWELD (welded design modelling with welding technology), Fanuc Roboguide (welding robot programming), and robotic complexes. Active introduction of robotic complexes in welding production is the main trend in the digital transformation of enterprises. Nowadays the department has a welding robot Fanuc with a two-axial positioner and a software package for its programming (Roboguide) which allows to do research in welding with a high degree of repeatability. Welding process is accompanied by intensive heating and re-crystallization of the original metal in the near-seam zone which may lead to a reduction in the service properties of the welded compounds. So in practice a person will need a competence in the field of metallurgy and weldability of modern steels. The creation of highly reliable welded structures taking into account the mechanical (soft and hard interlayers) and geometric (stress concentrators) heterogeneity of their connections is a complex technical and economic problem. Its solution is based on the reliability theory of mechanical systems considering the causes and patterns of failure of welded structures, criteria and methods for assessment of reliability and durability. The core disciplines of the educational programme include the following: Welding Robots, Theoretical Basis of Welding by Melting, Computer-Aided Engineering in Welding, Metallurgy and Welding, Systems of Engineering Analysis in Welding, Welded Joints Strength, etc. Successful students are building a career in engineering management in a wide range of organizations implementing welding technologies, tubing, shipbuilding, construction, mechanical engineering, automobile and oil and gas industries, in all enterprises where modern methods of welding high-strength steels are used. The graduates of the programme are highly demanded by Russian and international companies using welding technologies and are able to take up responsible engineering positions. Student’s Opinion: El Feleh Omar, Tunisia

El Feleh Omar now has a preparatory year before entering the university. He really loves engineering, programming and plans studying it at ��. And now he is already studying Russian language, which is rather difficult, as Omar said. But he is ready to cope with it. Omar has an enormous number of hobbies, plans and dreams. And all his speech is full of energy. If you’re ready to recharge your batteries and read about spicy food, winter and many dreams – this interview is for you! — Where are you from? Can you tell us some words about your country, about your native city? — I’m from Tunisia, it’s in the North Africa. I was born in the town near the capital – near Tunis. I’ve spent all my life here. And I really love my country, it’s very beautiful. We have all types of nature: in the one part of country we have snow, it’s cold, in the middle of country it’s comfortable weather. And also we have deserts and really hot places! — Oh, it sounds really awesome! And how many people live in your town? — In my town there are 10 or 15 thousand people. And in the whole country – approximately 13 or 14 million people. If I remember it right. — What is your major at ��? — Right now I have a preparatory year. I’m studying the Russian language, also some subjects are starting next month. So I’m going to study engineering next year. — Oh, it sounds great that you have time to prepare better! And how did you come across ��, why did you choose this university? — I was searching for university which could provide me better future and which would be rather comfortable. After my research I found ��. Also I learnt that there was a preparatory year in ��. It was fine for me. So I am here! I haven’t regretted my decision! — And also it’s very interesting to know about your emotions from preparatory process. — The process is going very well. And the atmosphere around me is really well too. When I go somewhere, when I’m walking, I can already speak with people, I can understand them. And I feel comfortable. The Russian language is not very easy, I realize it. But thanks to my teacher and to the studying process I learn it and feel more and more confident. — What impressions do you have from ��? — I love this place. It’s a great city, comparing with my native town it’s really big. I like Ural nature, I went to the forests, for example. And about the city: I’ve visited many places in ��, but I still explore it. — Oh, thank you. And was it hard to get used to new place, people, culture? — Well, about new place… It was first time when I left my country. So I was very excited about everything: about travelling the first time, the new city and life. At the same time, I was just enjoying and seizing the moment. About people – now I have a lot of friends. And we always have good time together! — What can you say about Russian winter? — You may find it weird, but I’m a winter guy. I love winter, I love the weather here. I go out every day! The only weather that I don’t like at all – wind. In windy days I stay home. But without wind, even if it’s cold, I’m fond of walking, especially in parks and forests. — Have you tried Russian food? Did you like it? — I have tried some dishes, but most of all I like spicy food. In our culture all food is very spicy and hot. When I tried something new, it was delicious. But it didn’t fit my tastes. — And is it difficult to find dishes which would be close to your culture? — Sometimes it’s hard. But I deal with it. Sometimes I even make my own spices in the dormitory. And all in all I like to cook – even not to eat. I love the process, it’s a kind of hobby. And I think I cook really delicious dishes! — And if we started talking about hobbies – how else do you spend your free time? — I have gym practically every day – only 1 day of rest. Also I’m learning to play the guitar. When it’s warm weather, I go skateboarding. I often go out and meet with friends in different places in ��. Also we can meet to watch movies. I really like hanging out with my friends, we’re from different nations and cultures, and it’s awesome! — How do you feel about Russian people? Maybe there were unusual or funny situations. — Since my flight and road to �� everybody was really cool. When I got here, I met some Russian friends, and they helped me very much with everything. Just imagine: I don’t know the language, I don’t know the culture. But thanks to my Russian friends I’ve coped with everything! Also in my guitar school I’ve met very nice people. They’re ready to help me with language, with my guitar. — What do you think about attracting international students to different universities? Is it a good idea? — I think it’s a good idea – both for universities and for students. Thanks to this idea universities can attract some talented students. And they can bring new interesting projects which will develop this university or the city, or maybe even the country. And for students it’s great because they get an opportunity to learn new culture, to find majors, skills and professions the are really want to master. Because the world is so big and different. — If it’s not a secret, can you tell us about your plans and dreams? — My dream is just to leave the way that I want, to try everything I want, to travel a lot, to see all the corners of the Earth. And for these plans I need a lot of money. But being rich is not my dream, it’s just the way to make my dreams come true. I want to have great job. My passion is programming, computing, I really like it. And I don’t want to be someone who goes to the job at 8 in the morning from Monday to Friday! I want to live free, to be a freelancer, to do projects on my own and send them to companies… And I don’t want to be tied to one place. I want to have enough time for my job and for things that I love: playing basketball, skateboarding, playing guitar… I love a lot of things! And I want to have them all in my life! Student’s Opinion: Mizhgen Holova, Tajikistan

Mizhgen Holova was born in Tajikistan, in Nurek. She decided to enter the university in Russia and entered ��. Now Mizgen is the fourth year student, she is studying in Institute of Engineering and Technology, her major is Technology of Transport Processes. About Mizhgen’s feelings and experience in ��, also about snow, national dishes and dreams – you can read in our interview. — Tell us please, why did you choose to study in Russia, at ��? — Frankly speaking, I had a dream – to study in Russia. I was choosing the city to live, the university to study. I was surfing sites, reading a lot. And most of all I liked ��. That’s why I entered it. — Do you remember your first impressions from �� and from the university? — I was really surprised how large �� is! And the same thing is about ��: how large and serious this building is. Moreover, later I’ve understood, that there is something like campus, a town for students around the university. — How did your parents react to your decision to relocate and enter the university in the other country? — They worried very much. And at the same time they were glad that I would study for free. Unfortunately I haven’t seen them for a long time. There is so much study and work now. I miss them. — Tell us please some words about your studying process: programme, professors; do you have favourite subjects? — Oh, it so happened, that my favourite subjects are languages: Russian and English. They are the most exciting for me. Also I really like our tutor. And there are good professors: many of them explain us different things interesting and clearly. — And some words about your hobbies – how do you spend your free time? — I’m a volunteer in the Association of International Students and Alumni. Every month we have different events, connected with sports, culture or entertainment. I really love to take part in this events and in organization process, I like to help people. And thanks to Association I got so many friends from different countries: Egypt, China, India, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan… — Have you met something new, unusual, astonishing in Russian culture and life? — One of the most unusual and beautiful things in Russian culture is Russian language. Your speech is amazing, it sounds like music. About new things in my life… It’s cold weather, for example, because it’s much warmer in Tajikistan. And snow! It’s really unusual for me. And if we talk about cuisine and dishes, in �� I usually cook something from my native cuisine: pilaf or shurpa. But I really want to learn how to cook Russian dishes, I’m interested in it! — Do you ever think about the reason why universities attract students from different countries, why this experience is so popular? — I think that in this situation both universities and students want to get more new experience and to make new connections. Muhammad is getting Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics and Robotics at ��. He is really interested in engineering, computer graphics, programming and many other really different things. He likes playing football and going to Ural lakes and forests. And why is �� connected with horror films in his impressions? What feelings does Muhammad have from meeting Russian people, greeting them and what about gloves? Why some trips to the forests become really breathtaking and scary for him? All the answers are in our interview! — Why did you choose to study in Russia? — I chose Russia because of the major, the profession that I want to study — Mechatronics and Robotics. In Egypt it’s not so good. And I found lots of recommendations and reviews saying that at ��, this major is at a really good level. Also it’s cheaper in Russia than in Europe. That’s why I am here, Russia. One more important thing – it’s an English-taught programme here. — Do you remember what your first impression from �� was? — When I firstly saw this building I found it was like an old palace or something like that! And I think it’ll be a good idea to make a horror movie in this building – it has really unusual cinematic atmosphere! It was my first impression. — What do you mostly remember about your studying process? — I can say that every subject is my favourite. But most of all I like computer graphics, because I feel that I can really do a lot of things in it like creating a lot of models. I like the way the professors teach us mathematics and physics. — And were there any subjects that were most difficult for you? — I guess no. In Egypt engineering course lasts for 5 years, here it is a 4-year course. I had one year of foundation course in Egypt. That is why last year practically everything during the course was familiar. This year there are some new things, next semester we’ll have new subjects. Let’s see! — Did you get any help from your compatriots who had come to �� earlier than you? — Yes, I have many compatriots here. And they helped me in many things: in dealing with medical insurance and going through the quarantine. They helped me with dormitory, with extending my visa, with making my bank account. And of course with Russian language, because they speak it better than me. I always could call someone and they helped me. — Did the Association of International Students and Center for Sociocultural Adaptation assist in any questions? — Oh, I know these organizations and sometimes participate in them. If I have a question, of course, I ask them or I can talk to the president of Association Ahmed Mohamed. — Why do many universities try to attract international students for studying? What do you think? — I think it’s a good idea to mix cultures. And there are many interesting and creative ideas that get advantages from each international student’s brain! Each human in his country has his own way of thinking. So attracting international students helps universities to be more progressive, lecturers and students become more open-minded and experienced. — Some words about your life in Russia – what was your greatest challenge about living here? — First thing is Russian language, but I hope to learn it thanks to practicing with my Russian friends. Second thing is cold weather definitely. I’ve never lived in such low temperatures. But I think I’ll easily adapt. And one more thing – taking off gloves if I want to shake hands with somebody. In Egypt we can shake hands in gloves. But as far as I’ve understood in Russia it’s more respectful to greet each other without gloves. And I do it, I’ve adapted. Also people here often get confused when they need to say my family’s name. It’s very short, in English – 3 letters: Eid. And people are surprised and ask me again and again, if it is really so short. And I think that it’s rather unusual for your language. But it’s funny. — And what do you do in your free time? — It depends. Most of the time I try to improve my skills, especially in self-studying. Also I like sleeping. I sometimes go for a walk to discover new places and to talk to new people. And Russian people are friendly, they’re ready to talk. If somebody knows a word in Arabic and he understands that I’m a foreigner, he comes to me and smiling says this word in Arabic to show that he knows the language a bit. Sometimes I play football with my friends from Egypt and Tajikistan. Also we can have fun driving a car. — Do you have any favourite places in ��? — I often go to Kirova Street. I like it. But most of all I like Ural lakes in summer. They’re really good. And forests are wonderful! I like trips to Ural forests. Sometimes I do it at night – it’s great and scary. But this experience’s worth it, especially when it’s cold. And I don’t go alone, I go with friends. — What can you tell your compatriots who are choosing a university now? — Well, they should be ready to work and study more and harder. There’re many things and problems they’ll face during studying abroad. But they’ll cope with them, I’m sure. Why a Chinese Student Chose �� to Get Education

�� is the most famous university in South Ural and no wonder international students choose it to get their education. As it is located at the border of Europe and Asia the university attracts many students from China. Nowadays more than 400 Chinese students are successfully studying at ��. They usually choose International Relations, Philology, Linguistics, Economics, Mechatronics and Robotics, Power Engineering. Wang Jiao, a �� student from China, studies at the Institute of Architecture and Construction and she agrees to answer some questions. - Why did you decide to come to Russia? - I am very interested in the people, culture and history of different countries, and I like to travel. When I started to look for information about a university where to study I got interested in Russia and its culture. - What influenced your choice of university? - The first thing, of course, is my interest in the profession. And I believe that my scientific and professional prospects after getting an education at �� are very good. - How did your parents react when they learnt you were going to study in another country? - Frankly speaking, my family was quite worried. They were afraid to let me go to another country. But they understood that getting a good education is one of the most important things in life and they agreed. - What do you like most about the university? - The teachers - they are great, I go to all the lectures and listen attentively. They explain everything clearly and are always ready to help even with the problems that don’t concern studying. The teachers took us to the cinema and to some excursion to help us, international students, acclimate to ��. - What is your future profession? - I am going to be a civil engineer. Since I was a kid I was keen on architecture and now I am sure that Construction Industry, Building Theory, Engineering Measurements, Concrete Compression and Bending are the most interesting subjects in the world. - Is it possible to find friends if you study in another country? - Of course. I found some good friends from Russia and other countries. �� Association of International Students and Alumni create comfortable conditions for students at the University, and in dormitories, organize different events and holidays for students to help us feel at home. It is great to know that you won’t be left alone. - Do you like Russian climate? - I like the weather in Russia very much, but the winter is a bit too long. In winter, despite the temperature, my friends and I do some indoor activities - skateboarding or skiing. This is a good choice to spend the time. - TOP-5 things you are going to do in Russia. - I hope to visit Murmansk to see the whales and the northern lights, visit Saint Petersburg, learn to ski, travel around Russia by car, learn Russian language and get a diploma with honors. - What can you say to young people who are choosing a university now? - Be very careful when you choose your profession. Your interest in something should be the first thing. From Cuba to �� for a Master’s Degree

�� is the most famous university in South Ural and no wonder international students choose it to get their education. It offers various programs including International Relations, Philology, Linguistics, Economics, Mechatronics and Robotics, Power Engineering and many others. Also a student can choose a Bachelor’s or Master’s program taught in English. What are the prospects of Russian education? How do students adapt to life in another country? We ask Mailyn Teresa Gonzalez Quintin, a student from Cuba, who is getting her Master’s degree in Strategic and Innovation Marketing in the School of Economics and Management. - Why do you like Russia, �� and ��? - I like Russia because it is careful to preserve its traditions. I admire the tribute that they offer every year to all those who fought in World War II. The first time I saw that tribute it was very shocking for me and it taught me to love the Russian people much more. �� is something special as it exceeded all my expectations - I like my program and admire my teachers. But the thing that should be highlighted is the commitment of all the university staff (professors, administration staff and student association) towards us, international students, they are always willing to support us and help to solve any problem. - Why did you choose to study in Russia? It is so far from your country. - You know Russia and Cuba have a long history of relationships. Many people in Cuba know Russian language. My first visit here was in 2017 for work reasons as I worked for a company which had some commercial relations with Russian companies. From that moment I liked its culture, food and customs. When making the decision to study abroad, I took Russia into consideration because it was a country that I already knew and that the tuition cost I could bear. - What was your greatest challenge about living in Russia? - The main challenge was the weather. I come from an island in the Caribbean where it is always summer and for me 15ºC was already cold. Here I had to adapt my body to the low temperatures of the Russian winter. Another challenge was the language. I have been through very funny situations, from buying totally wrong kinds of food to getting on buses whose routes were modified by repairs on the city roads and thus I get to places that I had never been before. - What was your first impression about ��? - My first impression was the organization that the university has, and my first experience was with the international student office. It is easy to follow each of the steps for admission to the university and immigration documents. - What do you remember most about your study? What subjects are your favourite ones? - My favorite topics in my program are Brand Management and the Creation of Business Ideas (Strategic Management). I'm always thinking of new ideas or how to improve the things that already exist. - How do you plan to use your education in future? - I want to start my own business in the construction sector, as that is my first profession. There I will be able to combine the knowledge of management, marketing and civil engineering. - Did the Association of International Students and Alumni and the Center for Sociocultural Adaptation assist in any questions? - Yes, they did. They welcomed me to the city and continue to be very supportive whenever I need it. I want to say “thank you” to the university for organising the Club and the Association as I never feel lonely here in ��. The members of the organisations and my teachers are always ready to help, provide care and support just like my family always does. I had the experience of studying at another Russian university and the experience wasn’t a lucky one. The administration didn’t help to get used to the country. For a newcomer in the country it was very difficult. - Do you take part in student life (volunteer center, School of young leaders, sport clubs, dance clubs, choir)? - Yes, I do. I am a member of the International Communication Club (M-Club) which is a non-profit social group dedicated to achieving harmony between local �� residents and international students. - Do you plan to comу back home after graduation or do you want to stay and work in Russia? - I want to live in Canada, it is something I have been dreaming of for many years. My first plan is to obtain a work contract and after settling in that country to be able to develop my own business. - Why do many universities try to attract international students for studying? - I think that while universities have a greater diversity of cultures and countries that makes them richer in knowledge and experience. There would be a direct exchange of knowledge between student-student and also student-teacher, which would benefit everyone. In the beginning it would be a challenge, but later they will manage to have more complete and valid programs for students from any country. - What would you wish your compatriots who are choosing a university now? - I recommend my compatriots to apply to ��. At this university you will have a wonderful experience, and the city, despite being small, is beautiful and full of history. Here they will make you feel that the most important thing is learning.
