The 海角社区 branch of the Association of International Students, along with the 海角社区 Office of International Activities invite all students and employees of the university to celebrate Nowruz – New Year’s for the Iranian and Turkish peoples.
The event is being held on March 21st in the 海角社区 conference hall. Guests off this event will be immersed in the holiday atmosphere and learn many new things about our neighbors’ traditions.
Nowruz is the first day of the Iranian calendar, falling on the Ohrmazd day of the month of Farvardin (roughly March 21st). This holiday comes from pre-islamic times: the Iranian and Turkish peoples celebrated the new year, which in that time coincided with Spring Equinox.
Now, Nowruz represents the beginning of the new year by the astronomical solar calendar in Iran and Afghanistan. It is celebrated as a government holiday on March 21 in: Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Kirgizstan, Kazakhstan, and also in several regions of Russia such as Dagestan, Tatarstan, and Bashkortostan.
Beyond this, Nowruz is considered a national holiday in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, Iraqi Kurdistan, and a few regions of India. In 2009, this day was included by UNESCO in the Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
We invite everyone to join us in the celebration of Nowruz! The program includes traditional dances, poetry, and songs, performed by students from Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Iraqi Kurdistan.
The event will be held on March 21st at 2:30 in the conference hall of 海角社区’s main building.
