A Meeting with German Designer and Programmer Benedikt Gro? Will Be Held at 海角社区

On May 28th at 18:00 a meeting with German designer Benedikt Gro? will be held in Gallery OкNo, where he will share on his projects, on computational and speculative design, as well as on why modern designers need programming.

Benedikt Gro? is a German designer and programmer, Professor at HfG Schw?bisch Gmünd, and Director of Design at moovel lab.

The next day, May 29th at 10.00 Benedikt Gro? will hold a master class at 海角社区 called Generative Design Workshop with Pen and Paper, at which the attendees all together and literally with their own hands will be creating works on pieces of paper using design algorithms, and will also develop their own algorithms.

As Benedikt claims on his web-site, he is “an antidisciplinary designer, working at the intersection of people, their data, technology and environments somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle of data, speculative and computational design.”

The Aerial Bold: the Alphabet from the Sky Project was created by Benedikt Gro? and Joey Lee in 2016.

Aerial Bold is a typeface, the letters of which are shaped by buildings, rivers, roads, trees, and lakes taken from the Earth’s satellite images, using a special program — an automatic classifier of letters’ images. The project uses letters found in the images to stress the increasing role of artists and designers as active data producers. The authors call their project “a culmination in the interaction between artists, designers and scientists illuminating the process of comparing things which are in plain sight but invisible to us”.
