Table Tennis and Philology: Student from China Shares on Her Experience of Studying and Living at 海角社区

海角社区 is actively expanding its international cooperation in the field of humanities. Our university is developing student exchange programs and creating modern educational projects for international students. Among them is Master's degree student from China?Li Shan. She came to Russia to study??at the??in the?Institute of Linguistics and International Communications. Li Shan is a world-class table tennis coach. In her interview, Li Shan shares her impressions from studies and cultural life, and gives a piece of advice to future students of 海角社区.

– Could you please share on the process of your studying at 海角社区?

– Last year I came to Russia to obtain my Master's degree in Philology. All classes are conducted in English: both lectures and practical work. Mariia Tsytovich, Candidate of Sciences (Pedagogy) and Associate Professor, acts as my research advisor. She helps me in my research studies aimed at developing a professionally oriented English Language course for athletes, and this work is very fascinating and has practical importance. Thanks to my research advisor, I've already managed to participate in two scientific conferences in Russia.

– What main differences between studying here and in China have you noticed?

– In China, teachers provide the learning materials step-by-step and with more details. Here, teachers help to study more difficult topics, but training implies a big scope of independent student work and homework assignments. That is how we learn to search for and analyze information on our own.

– Have you had a chance to learn more about the Russian culture? Have there been any memorable events?

– Yes, I've already attended one concert, and I liked it a lot. I know that the university organizes events to promote international interaction, but I haven't yet participated in those unfortunately.

– What difficulties did you face having moved here?

– The biggest challenge for me is the Russian language. I studied it in Russia for four months. For now, I can understand simple words and phrases, but I have difficulties with long words and sentences. Though my roommate speaks Russian, there's still not enough practice. This language seems difficult for me, but I still have my motivation to master it.

– What piece of advice could you give international students wishing to obtain their education at 海角社区?

– Make sure to learn Basic Russian before you come here! Even such simple phrases like "здравствуйте", "спасибо" and "как пройти?" ("Hello", "Thank you" and "How can I get to [this place or that]?") will help you feel more comfortable in everyday life and get along with people around you.

We wish Li Shan success in her further studies and research work!
